We have various options to login into Gtalk such as Gmail, Gtalk desktop edition, multi-messenger or a simple web multi-messenger. Today I want to show you how to know our friend’s Gtalk client. That means using which Gtalk client your friend has logged in.

Already we know that using one of the Gmail’s Lab feature we can find out who  are online via an android device as it shows those people with a green android symbol. But when anyone is online other than an android device, we cannot find whether they have logged in using Gmail or the traditional Gtalk desktop version. So let’s have a look at the way to know other clients.

Firstly we need to install Pidgin which is an open-source multi messenger software using which you can access almost any IM service that’s on the planet. Pidgin is my favorite IM client as it runs by taking very less resources from CPU as well as your broadband.

Download and install it from here.

After installation configure your Gtalk account and enable it. You can see all your friends who are online. Now just keep your mouse pointer on one of your friends name and there you can see the details like email, nickname and status.

Status is the thing we need to concentrate here, by studying it you can know using which client your friend has logged into Gtalk.

Let’s see know how to study the status with the help of following screenshots.

=================================================================
When logged into Gtalk using an android device the status is shown something like the below picture starting with "android". So this clues that your friend has logged into Gtalk using an android device.

=================================================================
And when we observe the status in the below screenshot we can see that there's something like "android_talk" it means that your friend has logged into an android device which has a higher version of android above 2.3 (Gingerbread).

When your friend is using some other client for Gtalk, then you can observe something smilar to the below screenshot. The Gtalk client in the below picture, Adium is a multi-protocol and free instant messaging application for Mac OS X.

In the similar way you can also know when your friend has logged into a blackberry device, whose screenshot will be similar to that of below.
